Television recordings

home

Among BAJRA’s archives are recordings of Indonesian television broadcasts on Balinese (and some Javanese) classical and popular cultural themes made between August 1990 and June 1998.

The archive as a whole comprises some 1,500 hours of materials, mostly recorded on S-VHS video tape.  Much of the material is on theatre and dance, with other important parts comprising documentary and ethnography on social and cultural topics.  All together it comprises a unique archive of Balinese culture and its media representation.

Follow this link for a description of the television materials, including titles and Indonesian language résumés for selected portions of the collection.

Because video tape is a highly perishable medium, BAJRA’s top priority is to preserve the collection through digital remastering.  To do so, we are currently seeking funding grants and making selected materials available to educational institutions.

BAJRA is licensed by the Indonesian Director General of Radio, Television and Film, by TVRI and by STSI Denpasar to digitize its holdings and to make copies available for research and educational purposes, including teaching.  The materials are therefore only for use in conformity to the usual restrictions covering educational licenses.  The materials are not available for commercial or non-educational use. (For conditions see Access).

The archive is currently being re-catalogued, so the catalogue is provisional.
